Hung King’s Festival is one of the greatest Vietnamese national festivals. It is from the 8th to the 11th days of the third lunar month, to honor the Hung Kings, because they were the first kings of Vietnam. There are two parts in this festival: the incense offering ceremony and the traditional competitions. People from around the country gather at Hung’s Temple in Phu Tho province to express their gratitude and celebrate with traditional music, rice cooking competitions, and dragon dancing. People also make traditional dishes such as “banh giay” (white sticky rice pudding), and “banh chung” (sticky rice cake) as symbolic offerings to the Hung Kings. In conclusion, the festival is a symbol of national strength, unity, and the connection between the past and the present.
