Harriet Tubman was born into slavery on a plantation in Maryland, USA. At first, she lived with her family, which included 11 children, in a one-room cabin. At the age of six, Harriet was loaned to another family to help take care of their baby. She was sometimes beaten and given very little to eat. When she was thirteen, she suffered a serious head injury when her owner tried to throw a weight at another slave but hit her instead. The injury caused Harriet to have dizzy spells and seizures throughout her life. ■ [A] Around this time, slavery was abolished in the north of the country and slaves tried to flee to the north for their freedom. They used the Underground Railroad, which refers to a series of safe houses called stations where slaves could hide as they traveled north. People that helped the slaves were called conductors.
■ [B] In 1849, Harriet decided to use the Underground Railroad to escape, and she made it to Pennsylvania and was set free. ■ [C] In fact, she was so famous a conductor that slave owners offered a reward of $40,000 for her capture. When the Civil War broke out, she worked as a spy for the North and then as a nurse to treat wounded soldiers. She was also involved in the Combahee Ferry Raid, helping free more than 700 slaves. Later in life, Harriet worked as an activist for the abolitionist movement that aimed to end slavery in the United States. She also fought for equal rights for black people and women in general. ■[D]

answer to each of the questions.
There has been significant progress made in the field of gender equality over the last few decades. On the positive side, more girls are attending school while fewer girls are forced into early marriage. More women occupy senior positions in organizations, and government legislation has been introduced to promote gender equality. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has set back this limited progress. Specifically, this challenging time aggravates the existing issues of gender discrimination in almost all aspects of life, from the economy to health and social protection. As a direct consequence of lockdowns, school closures, and the increased needs of the elderly, women’s unpaid care work has risen significantly. Moreover, as women usually work in the informal economic sector, where jobs are more insecure, they are more likely to be harder hit by the outbreak and more vulnerable to decreased income, unemployment, and poverty. More sadly, research reveals that for those who have long been suffering from violent acts, lockdown measures exacerbate the situation by trapping women at home with their abusers while they struggle to seek support from services suffering from budget cuts. Taking all this into consideration, the United Nations Secretary-General urged governments to place women and girls at the heart of their recovery measures to enable a quicker and more sustainable recovery. Hopefully, the COVID-19 pandemic is an opportunity for more positive actions to address long-term existing gender inequalities and empower women in all areas of their lives.
