I come from a town where people really care about the environment. We don’t want to live in a place that is dirty and full of pollution. So, we try our best to keep it clean. It isn’t always easy, but we do the best we can! There are many places and people that are working together to help make our town and the world better.
At the markets, many of the owners and managers have started to ___(26)__________ single-use plastics because they cause too much pollution. I think that more and more people are trying to save the environment, which is great. My school has also been trying to ___(27)__________the amount of pollution it is causing. All the students and teachers are trying their best. We are all also trying to ___(28)__________our trash, so that it doesn’t go to waste. There are still some things we can do better, but I’m happy with how hard we are all trying.
Even at home, we are trying our best. We try to save as much water as we can, and use as little electricity as possible. It isn’t only good for the environment, but also for us! If we use less water and electricity, we ___(29)__________save money!
I guess what I’m trying to show you is that the ___(30)__________to global warming and pollution is working together. We can all do our best individually, but as a team we can do an even better job!

WHERE DO MY RECYCLABLES GO?
Do you ever wonder what happens to your recyclables after they leave your house? That squashed can of Coca-Cola? How about your old homework paper? Let’s take a look!
First, the garbage truck picks up your recycled items and takes them to the Materials Recovery Facility, or MRF. This is where they sort the recycled materials into different groups: iron and steel, aluminum, glass bottles, paper, wood, and plastics. A tractor pushes the waste onto a conveyor belt, where workers pick out the pieces of trash that may damage the MRF machines. Sometimes we accidentally put the wrong things in our recycling bin, so these workers help to take them out.
Once all the recyclables are sorted into different groups, each type of material is either put into big containers, or they are baled. This means that they are crushed into big cubes. Some materials are cleaned, others are crushed, and most are melted; but all of these materials get recycled into a new product.
At the end of the whole process, the materials that were picked out by the workers or cannot be recycled will be taken to a landfill. This is why it is so important to recycle and to only put what is allowed into your recycling bin. If we throw our recyclables into a regular trash bin, they won’t be sent to the MRF and will therefore end up in a landfill. This is a waste of resources and bad for the environment.
