They relied on stars and landmarks, which weren't always reliable. With the compass, sailors could navigate more accurately and explore new places. The compass played a crucial role in the Age of Discovery when explorers like Christopher Columbus used it to find new lands. Even today, we still use compasses for navigation and exploration.
