OXFORD UNIVERSITY
Oxford University, which is 80 kilometres from London, is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was established in the middle of the 12th century and has been an important centre of study ever since. The university is not one building, but consists of 39 different colleges. Many of these colleges are very old and beautiful, and are famous for their "quads" - areas of grass and trees around which the colleges are built. There are a lot of competitions to get into Oxford, and admission is based on the results of a special entrance examination.
The colleges provide halls of residence for the students, though many prefer to stay in rented accommodation. Students riding through Oxford on their bikes, dressed in traditional black academic gowns, are a common sight in the town. Oxford used to be a place where only the rich studied, but today scholarships are available to give financial help to outstanding students, and young people from all over the world come to complete their education there. It must be a wonderful experience to study in such a university.
