The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, are awards presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor talented artists and creative products in the film industry. Winners are awarded a golden statuette called the Academy Award of Merit. The statuette features a knight holding a sword, standing on top of a reel of film with five spokes representing the five branches of the Academy: actors, writers, directors, producers, and technicians. The origins of the name 'Oscar' are not clear. A popular myth is that Margaret Herrick, the Academy librarian who later became the Academy executive secretary, said that the statuette reminded her of her Uncle Oscar, so the Academy staff then started referring to it as Oscar. The statuettes are made of solid bronze and are gold-plated. It takes around three months to produce 50 Oscar statuettes for the Awards Ceremony. All Oscar statuettes have blank base plates as the Academy wants to prevent the names of the Oscar winners from being leaked prior to the ceremony. Since the first Awards Ceremony in 1929, more than 3,000 statuettes have been presented.
